BROOKLYN, NY — Cyclone Bagels, the new bagel shop in Coney Island, opened this week with a mission: to employ and support formerly homeless veterans.

At Thursday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony, local lawmakers celebrated the new shop, which is on the ground floor of Surf Vets Place, a residential building for veterans and low-income families run by Concern for Independent Living, Inc.

“We have a profound obligation to support the men and women who served in our nation’s armed forces – especially when they fall on hard times,” Councilmember Justin Brannan, who represents Bay Ridge, Coney Island and Sea Gate, said. “Cyclone Bagels and Surf Vets Place is a beacon of hope for veterans experiencing homelessness and an affirmation of New York’s commitment to ensuring they have access to job training and permanent stable housing.”

The new shop, named after the popular Coney Island roller coaster, will provide employment opportunities as well as job training programs for vets who want to work in the food and service industry, officials said.

“Every bite is a thrill!” the Cyclone Bagels website reads.

At Cyclone Bagels, hiring priority will go toward veterans who live in Surf Vets Place, organizers said.

“It is a great honor to provide housing and workforce development opportunities to the men and women who served our country and protected our freedoms,” said Ralph Fasano, the executive director of Concern, said.

Cyclone Bagels is located at 2028 Surf Ave. in Brooklyn and is open every day, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
